Steel Chimney Coatings, Stoke
MCP Painting Group applied a protective coating system to a set of steel chimney sections in Stoke. The work was carried out off site, at the steel company’s own premises. The steel was first shotblasted by a specialist preparation company we work closely with, and our team then built the system up in stages: two coats of primer, followed by a single coat of durable polyurethane topcoat.

Scope of work
Our scope covered the coating of the chimney steelwork once our preparation partner had shotblasted it:
- Two coats of primer applied to the prepared steel
- One coat of durable polyurethane topcoat as the finishing coat
Why the system was built up this way
Shotblasting is an abrasive surface preparation method. It removes mill scale, rust and other contamination and leaves a clean, profiled surface for the first coat to grip.
The two primer coats form the corrosion-protective base of the system and give the topcoat a sound surface to bond to. The polyurethane topcoat is the final layer, giving the steel durable protection against the weather and the atmospheric exposure a chimney faces in service.
Primed and topcoated stages
The photographs on this page show the chimneys at two separate stages. The first set shows the sections after priming, an intermediate stage that came after shotblasting and before the topcoat. The second set shows the sections with the finished topcoat applied. Both sets were taken at the steel company’s premises, at different times and in different parts of the site, so they are not matched before-and-after views of the same angle.
The result
The chimney sections were completed with the full system of two primer coats and a polyurethane topcoat.
